I don’t like to do book reviews. I’ll give you a synopsis if you ask and can tell you how I felt about it, but I hate going into a book with someone else’s thoughts leading me to feel a certain way about it. I have one friend who I have known for yearssssssssss (over 15 years). We both love to read. I would read any book she recommends me without thinking twice about it. If only you could see the messages we send when one is reading a book the other recommended. Be glad you can’t hear me cackling.

Anyway, my point is books are their own art form, I find it very rare I agree with everything in a book review - probably because I don’t ready very many so the statistics on that notion are a little skewed - but when I do read a book review or a person tells me their opinions of parts of the book before I’ve read it, it’s hard to go in without those ideas clouding your judgment before you get a chance to meet the characters and understand their situation for yourself. It taints your view of the art before you even look at it. Honestly it’s like gossip. You’re inserting yourself into the lives of the characters but having an opinion in the back of your head about them before you even get the chance to hear their story.

So, what’s the point of sharing these books on here if I’m not gonna tell you exactly what’s in them? Well I think thats the job of the jacket cover summary. It wasn’t written just to take up space, it has all the information the author wants you to know about the book before you even turn the first page or open the book (if the summary is on the back).

If you’re looking online a quick google search should give you a pretty good summary or you can look on goodreads.com, but be careful because Goodreads also has loads of reviews just below the synopsis.

I’m still trying to figure out my rating process because books either tend to become my absolute new favorite, are just eh or I think you just shouldn’t read it. If you look at the books on my favorites list there is a decent pattern. Love story, dystopian society/fiction, magic. If it has two or more of those things (and was written well) I can almost guarantee I will like it, potentially love it, especially if I am introduced to my new dream guy in the form of a fictional character.

I also love historical fiction. I love learning a bit about an event/time period in our history in a story form I can relate to. These don’t tend to end up on my absolute favorite list but I also want to give them 5 stars. So I almost need a 5 star plus for my absolute favorites and 5 stars for the books that deserve it even though they don’t end up on my absolute favorites list just because there was no magic in it, ya know? My problem is I cannot seem to rate a book with 4 stars. It’s either 5 or nothing.

If you’re still here, still reading props to you, let’s just get to the books, shall we?

Series
The Prison Healer - Lynette Noni
The Gilded Cage - Lynette Noni
The Blood Traitor - Lynette Noni
// Recommend - 5Star+

Something I highlighted while reading:

“So you’re right, you don’t need me fighting your battles. But if you’ll let me, I’d like to be standing beside you as you fight them.”

“I know for a fact that they’d live it all over again, even the ending, as long as it meant they could keep their beginning”

“We all have spaces we keep blank.”

Series
Crescent City - SJM
House of Sky and Breath - SJM
House of Flame and Shadow - SJM
// ughhhhh

APUA (Automatic Pick-Up Author)
This is her worst series in my opinion. The only reason I say you should read it is because she is still writing her other series (ACOTAR) and there is crossover with that series and this one.

Series
Once Upon a Broken Heart - Stephanie Garber
The Ballad of Never After - Stephanie Garber
A Curse for True Love - Stephanie Garber
// ughhhhh

All I have seen are people RAVING about this series and I hated it. I’m sorry.

APUA - The year of the Re-Read!
I LOVE this series sooo much and this became the book club series or rather SJM became the book club author of this Vegas Thrill season.

Something I highlighted while reading:

“You cannot pick and choose what parts of her to love.”

Funny Story - Emily Henry
// Recommend

APUA
Loved this one! Her characters are my favorite and the voice she uses throughout her stories is relaxed, casual, funny.

Something I highlighted while reading:

“You can't force a person to show up, but you can learn a lesson when they don't”

“Flags so red, they veered toward maroon.”

Series
A Court of Thorns and Roses - SJM

The Idea of You - Robinne Lee // Recommend

This book absolutely wrecked me. Decided to read it on a travel trip so I could watch the movie on the way home…
The rollercoaster.

Something I highlighted while reading:

“You afraid?” he asked. I nodded. “So am I. But I’m all right with that. If I get hurt, I get hurt. It happens, right? Someone always gets hurt. But I don’t want to miss out on us because I was afraid.”

“I want to do things that feed me. I want to surround myself with art and fascinating people and stimulating experiences … and beauty. I want to surprise myself.”

Series
The Viscount Who Loved Me - Julia Quinn
The Duke and I - Julia Quinn
An Offer From a Gentleman - Julia Quinn
Romancing Mister Bridgerton - Julia Quinn
To Sir Phillip, With Love - Julia Quinn
When He was Wicked - Julia Quinn
// If you liked the show…

I decided I wanted to read them before season 3 came out this summer. I like that you get more insight to the stories. Slight changes here and there, nothing too major that’s different from the book to the show until you get to Francesca’s story…

Series
Powerless - Lauren Roberts
Reckless - Lauren Roberts
// RECOMMEND - 5Star+

LOVED the first book! It was everything I had been wanting in a book since I’ve been in a bit of a slump since honestly Fourth Wing. Just checked all the boxes for me.
Patiently waiting for book 3…

Something I highlighted while reading:

“I was lonely in a way that I imagine the stars to be, observed by everyone yet too far to truly be seen.”

“You know it’s not the words that bother me, it’s—” “It’s the meaning behind them,”

Ledge - Stacey McEwan // Pending…

I know this author from TikTok/Reels. I think she’s hilarious. I hesitated to read her book because the few I had seen by the author from BookTok just didn’t live up to it. But I finally gave in and tried the first book. This is a trilogy. I liked it. I have not run out to get the second book yet, but I am still entertaining the idea. I think I will love this series by the end, but I’m scared.

Series
Serpent & Dove - Shelby Mahurin
Blood & Honey - Shelby Mahurin
//

Working through the series. So far I like it. Not love, not hate, just like.

11/75 BOOK REVIEWS // JANUARY - DECEMBER 2023

Chain of Thorns - Cassandra Clare (see 2022 below)

The Atlas Six - Olivia Blake // Recommend

So over my head, but so intriguing. Currently stuck on the second book but want to keep reading so badly.

Arch-Conspirator - Veronica Roth //

Happy Place - Emily Henry //

Another automatic pick up author.
This is my least favorite of all her books.

The Roommate Pact - Allison Ashley
// Recommend

Loved the characters in this book.

Ella Minnow Pea - Mark Dunn // Recommend

All you need to know is letters get banned in this world, like individual letters and the author actually stops using them in the story. So cool and crazy!

53/100 BOOK REVIEWS // JANUARY - DECEMBER 2022

The Hating Game - Sally Thorne // Recommend

The Ten Thousand Doors of January - Alix E. Harrow // Recommend

Very similar to The Starless Sea

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue - V. E. Schwab // Recommend

I love this author.

“Seeing him was like missing a step, like fabric snagging on a nail. A moment thrown off-balance.”

“…paralyzed by the idea that whatever you choose to do, it means choosing not to do a hundred other things.”

“But isn’t it wonderful,’ she says, ‘to be an idea?”

Conversations with Friends - Sally Rooney // Recommend

This was a book I wanted to talk about after I finished it.

Something I highlighted while reading:

“He was the first person I had met since Bobbi who made me enjoy conversation, in the same irrational and sensuous way I enjoyed coffee or loud music. He made me laugh.”

“It would have been dramatic to introduce capitalization at such a moment of tension.”

Normal People - Sally Rooney // Recommend

Also very much wanted to talk about it after I finished it.

Something I highlighted while reading:

“Marianne had the sense that her real life was happening somewhere very far away, happening without her, and she didn’t know if she would ever find out where it was and become part of it.”

“They were attended only by people who wanted to be the kind of people who attended them”

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid // Recommend

Love this author - I liked Daisy Jones and the Six better.

Something I highlighted while reading:

“When you realize you can tell someone your truth, when you can show yourself to them, when you stand in front of them bare and their response is “You’re safe with me” — that’s intimacy.”

Series
A Darker Shade of Magic - V.E. Schwab
A Gathering of Shadows - VES

Something I highlighted while reading:

“Because caring was a thing with claws. It sank them in, and didn’t let go.”

The Love Hypothesis - Ali Hazelwood // Recommend 5Star

RomCom-esque

After Dark - Haruki Murakami // Recommend

Something I highlighted while reading:

“Everything about the restaurant is anonymous and interchangeable.”

“Maybe so, but if he loses an ear, he’s got nothing to hang his glasses on.”

“That people’s memories are maybe the fuel they burn to stay alive”

“It’s not as if our lives are divided simply into light and dark. There’s a shadowy middle ground. Recognizing and understanding the shadows is what a healthy intelligence does. And to acquire a healthy intelligence takes a certain amount of time and effort.”

Woman on Fire - Lisa Barr // Recommend 5Star

Historical Fiction
Investigative Journalism
Nazi Art Movement

Something I highlighted while reading:

“Details are the deal breaker”

“Who eats his sandwich with a fork and knife”

Fugitive Colors - Lisa Barr // Recommend

Historical Fiction
Nazi Art Movement

I had to physically put this book down several times because what was happening to the characters was so awful and because it was reminiscent of what really happened during this war; it made me sick.

If We Were Villains - M.L. Rio // Recommend 5Star

Murder Mystery but make it Shakespeare
Beautifully written prose interspersed with play script: dialogue

Something I highlighted while reading:

“Murder’s as near to lust as flame to smoke”

“How tremendous the agony of unmade decisions”

Ain’t Burned All the Bright - Jason Reynolds + Jason Griffon //

Divine - M.J. Woodman //

Saw this book on TikTok
Under the impression this book is self published
It had so much potential - I loved the premise and the main characters name is Electa Steel, like how freaking cool. But it just didn’t quite live up to my expectations.

Five Tuesdays in Winter - Lily King // Recommend

Collection of Short Stories

Holding On to Nothing - Elizabeth Chiles Shelburne //

This one started with youthful excitement, wove its way to naive hope and left you with devastating heartbreak that we all saw coming but really wished we didn’t.

The Spanish Love Deception // Recommend

RomCom

Series
Six of Crows - Leigh Bardugo
Crooked Kingdom - Leigh Bardugo
// Recommend

Something I highlighted while reading:

“No mourners. No funerals.”

The Sun Also Rises - Ernest Hemingway // DO NOT Recommend

Series
It Ends With Us - Colleen Hoover
It Starts With Us - Colleen Hoover

IEWU will always have a special place in my heart because it was so hyped up on social media that I reallllyyyyy did not want to read it. Everyone was reading it, but I am SO glad that I did.

Gallant - V. E. Schwab // Recommend

So different. Just fits the V.E. Schwab vibe.

Where the Crawdads Sing - Delia Owens // Recommend

Love on the Brain - Ali Hazelwood // Recommend

I love Ali Hazelwood so much. That’s it.

Shatter Me - Tahereh Mafi //

I love the dystopian society novels, and I think they all take a little bit from each other, but I felt like I had read this book before and was super bored.

Book of Night - Holly Black // Recommend

I hated this book until the last 1/3, loved it, and then hated the ending.
So do with that what you will.

Shadow and Bone - Leigh Bardugo //

Ehhh

Carrie Soto is Back - Taylor Jenkins Reid // Recommend

I think sports books are really hard to read because I’ve lived that life, but this will be a top favorite book for a long time!

Series
Chain of Gold - Cassandra Clare
Chain of Iron - Cassandra Clare
// Recommend
Chain of Thorns - Cassandra Clare

I AM IMPATIENTLY WAITING FOR THE THIRD BOOK TO COME OUT JANUARY 31st!
(Update: It came out. I read it. I didn’t love it.

Men Without Women - Haruki Murakami//

Several short stories.

Lightlark - Alex Aster // Do Not Recommend

This book was hyped up on TikTok, just like Divine, and it was a big let down.
The plot had so much potential and the characters too, but there was like no follow through. I’m all about the love story but you could tell that took precedence over the actual plot of the story instead of being a by-product of the plot.

Alone With You in the Ether - Olivie Blake // Recommend

I loved the characters in this book. Broke my heart.
